As opposed to a cat-back (catalytic converter-back) exhaust system, an axle-back exhaust, as the name implies, typically replaces the factory exhaust right around the rear axle to the exhaust tip(s), including the muffler(s). The benefits of an axle-back exhaust are typically a lower cost (over a cat-back system), increased power, and improved sound.
