Nitrous oxide became popular in racing thanks to its ability to provide more oxygen to the mixture than normal air, which means you can also burn additional fuel and create more powerful combustion. Nitrous was first used in German WWII fighter air craft to improve their high-altitude performance, but in the post war era the technology was quickly adopted by hot rodders as an inexpensive way to boost power output. It is important to note that nitrous kits can make big power gains and if the rest of your motor has not been built to compensate for that power, you are taking the risk of destroying your engine. But if you want to go fast on a budget it is hard to top a nitrous kit.
