Wings, which are also referred to as spoilers, are directly derived from the aerospace industry. On an airplane the purpose of a wing is to provide lift by creating pressure differences between the air flowing over the top and bottom of the wing. In the 1950s some racing engineers began to realize that by flipping an airplane wing upside down and mounting it on a race car it would generate down force that would help the car stick to the race track better, particularly at high speeds.
