Most coil springs utilize rubber bushings at the top and bottom to keep the springs properly located and prevent metal on metal contact that can quickly wear and damage your vehicle's suspension. These OEM bushings are susceptible to heat and chemicals such as gas and oil, which cause them to break down quickly leaving your coil springs free to rattle around in their spring buckets. Before this happens and causes more expensive problems it is important to replace your coil spring bushings with a brand new set. Many aftermarket companies offer uprated bushings made out of materials such as polyurethane. These urethane bushings have a huge performance advantage over rubber; they are more durable, hold their shape better, and have a higher durometer which translates to increased handling capabilities. In the truck world coil spring bushings can also be purchased in different thicknesses so that you can add a little lift to your vehicle. The thicker the bushing, the more lift you will get. So if you want to level your ride height or add a slightly taller tire, a new set of coil spring bushings is a cheap way to attain your goal.

Q: Why buy new bushings? What is the benefit?
A: Many advantages can be found over your stock bushings (especially if they're old!): Urethane bushings have a higher load-bearing capacity, greater tear strength, better compression set, greater abrasion resistance, and better tolerance to greases and oils. Polyurethane is an ideal material for performance suspension bushings, motor and transmission mounts. Additional horsepower, plus size tires, lifted truck suspension or lowered canyon carving street setups all mix with normal atmospheric conditions and undercar grit and grime to stress rubber bushings beyond design limits. Polyurethane bushings are firm enough to control movement and maintain alignment in sway bars, control arms, and other stressed suspension components without the harshness or resonance associated with solid metal suspension bushings.
