The leaf springs on your vehicle are asked to do a lot. Not only do they have to provide flex and load carrying capacity, but with this suspension set up the leaf spring also acts as the axle locating member, keeping the axle from moving front to back or laterally. OEM leaf spring bushings often are not up to the task of keeping the axle under control. Over time these rubber bushings degrade and crumble leaving you with a vehicle that jumps all over the road. If you are at all in doubt about the status of your leaf spring bushings, we highly recommend that you pick up a new set.

Axle location is a tough job. The leaf spring bushings are being push, pulled and torqued in all directions, so it is no wonder that the OEM rubber bushings do not last very long. Fortunately many of the top brands in the aftermarket suspension industry offer high-performance leaf spring bushings made of tougher materials that are better suited to this task. Materials such as polyurethane offer huge advantages over rubber. While still relatively inexpensive, urethane bushings are resistant to heat and chemicals, are better at maintaining their shape, and provide improved handling characteristics. If it is time to replace your bushings, we think it is the perfect opportunity to make an upgrade.

Q: Why buy new bushings? What is the benefit?
A: Many advantages can be found over your stock bushings (especially if they're old!): Urethane bushings have a higher load-bearing capacity, greater tear strength, better compression set, greater abrasion resistance, and better tolerance to greases and oils. Polyurethane is an ideal material for performance suspension bushings, motor and transmission mounts. Additional horsepower, plus size tires, lifted truck suspension or lowered canyon carving street setups all mix with normal atmospheric conditions and undercar grit and grime to stress rubber bushings beyond design limits. Polyurethane bushings are firm enough to control movement and maintain alignment in sway bars, control arms, and other stressed suspension components without the harshness or resonance associated with solid metal suspension bushings.
